Talk freely about your ideas

By Pachi | Jul 27, 2008

Idea I remember the times when I would hesitate to discuss my ideas with others. Most of the time hesitating, thinking, people would laugh at it and sometimes fearing that they may copy it. This is one of the most common mistakes we, wannabe entrepreneurs do early in our career.

We tend to get over protective about our ideas and never talk about it. This gives way for ideas to rot and die.

Even logic supports this, we want to discuss the idea with someone who knows more than us, but, as he knows more than us, we think he may copy the idea and execute it faster than us. Correct right? WRONG!

It is very difficult to identify good ideas. Can also go to an extent of saying, An idea becomes good only after it has tasted success.

IBM laughed at Wozniak’s computer - The result, Apple was formed and became a household name and a multi billion dollar company

Yahoo and Microsoft laughed at the idea of search engine - The result, Google was formed giving them a run for their money

Do not let your ideas die. If you think that people may laugh at your idea, then it is almost a sure sign of it being a good idea. So don’t hesitate to think further about it, all the more, to talk about it with relevant people.

An idea is just a thought. It no way determines success or a heavy bank account. If your idea is so easy to copy, then probably, it is not worth pursuing or just not yet ready. Say, even if you launch a product, and it is so easy to copy and there a market there for the product, then anyone with more cash than you can easily steal the market away from you in no time. If this is your case, then you will have to consider spending more time on the product, developing the IP and taking the time lead.

Even during this process, continue to talk to a closed group of friends and potential customers about your idea. This not only keeps you going but also gives you valuable feedback and forms a good base of beta testers.

Once you are confident about your position, have built an IP, or have a time lead, then you can more openly discuss the idea with others.

It is important to discuss your idea, and what is as important is with whom you discuss it with. The main factor being trust. Just see to it that you trust the person with whom you are discussing the idea.

    Very well written post. I agree with this completely. In my experience of having interacted with so many startups and entrepreneurs, i can certainly say that what matters more is the execution; even though people come to know of your idea, not many shall be able to execute it the way you visualize it.

    Cheers

    @Vaibhav
    Thank you for commenting.
    This attitude must be changed… see more this kind of attitude in the inexperienced ones than the experienced one…

    The “i can do anything” overshadows the perseverance and hard work that must be there to make things work…. and we begin to think.. if I can do it.. so can others.. and this might be the one that is hampering the open attitude…… just a thought
